TikTok Shop is the first marketplace where the content is the shelf. There is no search bar to win, no Buy Box to hold. A product sells because a video of it sold it, and then it sells again because a hundred affiliates made their own version of that video. Beauty does unusually well here for one reason: the product demonstrates itself on camera. Texture, application, before and after, the sound of a pump. That is also why so many brands burn cash on it.

Start with the shop, not the creators

Feed accuracy, category compliance, shipping SLAs and return handling decide whether TikTok will show your products at all. Beauty categories carry ingredient and claims rules that get listings pulled. Get the shop clean and boring before spending a dollar on creators, because a viral video pointing at a suspended listing is the most expensive thing that can happen to you.

Affiliates are a program, not a giveaway

The default failure mode is open-collaboration to everyone, thousands of free samples out, and a handful of sales back. Set commission and sample rules by creator tier, approve in batches, and read GMV per creator weekly. Concentrate samples on the creators who actually post. A hundred creators who post beat a thousand who collect.

Ads follow content, never the reverse

Shop ads and GMV Max work when they amplify videos that already convert organically. Running ads on a product with no proven creative is paying to discover that the creative does not work. Let creators find the hook, then put money behind the winners.

Pricing has to survive the platform

TikTok pushes deep promotions and platform-funded coupons. Some are genuinely funded; some quietly come out of your margin. Read every promotion’s funding source before opting in, and model creator commission plus platform fee plus shipping on the discounted price, not the list price.

Do not treat it as a stand-alone channel

A TikTok video sends people to Amazon to read reviews and to Shopify to check the brand. When TikTok spikes, Amazon search volume for the brand name follows within days. Brands that track this can set Amazon inventory and ad budget ahead of it; brands that run TikTok in a silo stock out on Amazon the week their video lands.

The rhythm that keeps it profitable

Weekly: creator approvals, sample allocation, ad winners and losers, listing health. Monthly: contribution margin per product on the channel, including samples as a cost. If samples are not in the margin sheet, the channel will look profitable right up to the moment it is not.
